Chapter One

May 7, 2019

New York City, USA

Sallie gazed up at the beige stone building, adjusting her sunglasses as the light beamed off of the windows. The building was located on Fifth Avenue in New York City. It was on the corner of the street, giving it an old-fashioned and spacious feel. Sallie quite liked the ambience of it. Eager to see the interior of the building, she followed the building administrator, Mrs. Anderson, through the doors.

Immediately, when Sallie saw the stretch of shelves on either side of the building’s interior, she imagined them lined with jars of Italian spices and eclectic, vintage pieces. As a child, Sallie had learned the art of Italian cuisine from her grandmother. She’d since gone to become a certified chef and was ready to open her own restaurant in honor of her grandmother, who had recently passed away. It was with the money Sallie had accrued from her grandmother’s will that she would be able to afford to open the place.

“The kitchen is around back here,” Mrs. Anderson called from behind a display case. Sallie had been so busy gawking over the shelves, she’d almost forgotten she still had the rest of the building left to view. “Now, as you may know, this building was originally a bakery called Brenda’s Bakery,” Mrs. Anderson informed Sallie as they entered the kitchen. “The bakery opened in the 1920s and closed in the 1940s. It was then briefly opened as a different bakery, but again closed.”

In comparison to the large stone oven she was standing beside, Mrs. Anderson looked like a pencil. She was excruciatingly thin, and wrinkled, as though she’d spent more of her life smoking than doing anything else. Sallie was completely entranced by the oven. With a few minor modifications, she’d be able to cook stone oven pizza. Already, ideas for menu options flooded Sallie’s mind.

“This oven is incredible!” she remarked, moving closer to take a better look. As she did so, she noticed a rather unsightly stain encrusted on the kitchen floor at the base of the oven. She bent down to inspect it. It was a brown-red in coloration. It looked as though a pool of something had been spilled. Something about its garishness made Sallie’s skin crawl. “Do you know what this is from?” she inquired.

Mrs. Anderson shook her head. “Probably some form of food residue. A sauce, maybe? I don’t know. I will tell you something, though—the maintenance crew I hired to clean this place did a lousy job! How could they have missed a stain like this?!”

“I’m sure it won’t be too hard to remove myself,” Sallie said. She was thankful the majority of the cleaning had already been done for her. This way, she could focus on getting a good team of chefs and servers together, as well as having the sign made. Sallie planned on calling her restaurant Bella Lucia, after her grandmother.

Sallie was shown the rest of the building and was more than impressed with its amenities. It had a full walk-in fridge, plenty of dry storage, and updated kitchen appliances.
